Breden Residence & Landscape | Torrance, California
Part of the original track, built in 1952, this Hollywood Riviera home has been completely updated using traditional details, materials and modern construction standards. This gentle blue home with classic white trim combines plaster, siding and stone to achieve a certain understated elegance. The soft lines and curves of the landscape design compliment the overall presentation of the home. The plan to update the home required demolition down to the structures wood framing. The next step in its' transformation was to strategically removing certain walls to achieve a more open and functional floor plan. This and the addition of approximately 1,400 square feet of new space provided for the homes overall new interior layout. The design also provided for 600 square feet of additional decks and balconies that could be used to enjoy the properties city lights views. The entire habitable project completed is approximately 3,400 square feet. For the interior, the most significant areas of improvement were in the open living room, dining room and kitchen area; the new master bedroom suite complete with walk-in closet, master bath and sitting area; along with decks and balconies off the main floor to take advantage of the sites sloping lot and views. The interior is appointed with the simplicity of shaker details which is carried out with custom designed and milled door and window casings plus beautiful furniture like cabinetry throughout. The existing structure was built with exposed beams, rafters and tongue and groove ceilings and was copied throughout for a grand sense of continuity between the new and existing structure. The interiors are designed with the exterior landscape, hardscape and views in mind; each of these components working together for a very elegant finished home.
